The biggest mistake I see entrepreneurs make is trying to use AI to write better Excel formulas. That is like hiring a master chef to sharpen your butter knives. The real shift isn't 'AI in Excel,' it is 'AI instead of Excel.' Most of what we do in spreadsheets is actually data pipeline work that should be automated at the source using tools like Rows or Equals that treat the spreadsheet as a live data engine, not a static graveyard for CSVs. I call this 'The Ghost Logic Phenomenon.' When you use AI to automate a sheet, you lose the visible trail of a formula, which makes traditional auditing impossible. You need to move from 'checking the math' to 'checking the intent.' If your AI sheet is pulling data from Shopify and Stripe to calculate margin, don't look at the cells—look at the Python script or the API query it generated in the background. If you can't see the logic, don't trust the output. Also, be wary of formula bloat. Just because an AI can write a 400-character nested IF statement doesn't mean it should. If your spreadsheet requires AI to explain its own logic to you, your process is fundamentally broken. Use AI to simplify the data structure, not to build a more complex Rube Goldberg machine. My rule: if the AI can't explain the logic in one sentence of plain English, the sheet is too complex to be reliable.
